The story of the Las Animas Mining District in Colorado's San Juan Mountains began with the Colorado Gold Rush of 1860, but it was silver that kept the local mines operating for over one hundred years. Burlington Zephyrs - Photo Archive

Part #: CEN-BURLINGTONZEPHYRS

Centennial Publications

With declining passenger revenues Burlington President Ralph Budd realized something unique was needed to lure passengers back to train travel. The result was the Zephyr. The Zephyr's appeal during the Great Depression was tremendous, its sleek lines and streamline design was the beginning of a styling revolution. In 1934, the only real hope was the future and the future was the Zephyr. A Burlington Superintendent best summed the Zephyr experience in these words, ''You would first notice a speck of stainless-steel emerging out of the distant haze. Then in spectacular fashion it would flash by, a mass of shimmering steel, traveling a hundred miles an hour and within seconds vanish again in the distance.'' Featured in high quality photos and descriptive captions the Burlington Zephyrs are shown in a variety of scenic, rural and urban settings. Also included are vintage brochures, timetables, postcards and ads.

Railway layouts often depict a branch line in a rural or urban setting, with the majority of locomotive models representing passenger trains. However, increasingly, ready-to-run models of industrial locomotives are becoming available, providing the unique opportunity to place them into an industrial context. This new book gives the guidance and inspiration to place these models in their natural, industrial environment. It gives step-by-step descriptions of several build projects including a gas holder, a cooling tower and an open hearth melting shop. The book shows how to make resin buildings, kits and scratch-building and demonstrates the construction of industrial struce models in a variety of scales. And finally the development of an industrial locomotove fleet, specialized rolling stock and road vehicles are covered.

Throughout the 1950s and 1960s the Ski Train was youth-oriented-dominated by the Eskimo Club, whose members ranged in age from 7 to 17, Today, many older Denver natives credit the Ski Train and the Eskimo Club for introducing them to skiing. The 1980's brought hard times to the Ski Train. Ridership steadily declined, and the 1915 vintage railcars began to show their age. In 1988, Ansco Investment Company, a Denver based company, acquired the train with its purchase by its parent company of the D&RGW railroad. Under this management the "New Ski Train" was born, the old cars were sold and replaced by "Tempo" cars purchased from Canada. Each year introduced a new generation of skiers not just the joy of skiing, but to joys of traveling by train, as well.

Colorful East Broad Top

Part #: CEN-EASTBROADTOP

Centennial Publications

Colorful East Broad Top. It is the last of its breed east of the Rockies and the oldest narrow gauge railroad in the nation. Built in the early 1870s, the East Broad Top hauled iron, coal, ore, minerals and passengers for over 83 years. The three-foot-gauge trackage twisted along a picturesque 32-mile route connecting Mount Union, Orbisonia and Robertsdale in remote and beautiful south-central Pennsylvania. The "Eastie" earned its keep until the end of regular operations in the autumn of 1956. With the closing of the last Rockhill Coal Company mine, the EBT quietly closed its doors. It had outlived hundreds of its slim gauge counterparts across the country. The EBT connected isolated communities with the mighty Pennsylvania Railroad in Mount Union. It was here that the "narrow railroad" interchanged with the "Standard Railroad of the World," using unique three-rail trackage and its own engines equipped with dual couplers. When the EBT stopped hauling coal in the late 50s, it was not torn up. While waiting for scrap prices to rise, owner Nick Kovalchick and his family became interested in preserving the line. A group of Orbisonia citizens, who wanted to celebrate the settlement's bicentennial, approached the Kovalchick Salvage Company in 1960 about the possibility of reopening a portion of the line. EBT's Operating Vice President C. Roy Wilburn was still on the payroll and, after much hard work and hard cash, the EBT reopened on August 13, 1960 for tourist service over a short section of trackage that ran north out of Orbisonia. Now, the rest is history. The EBT is unique and colorful in many ways. No where else can steam locomotives be found operating over original tracks with their three-way stub switches positioned by Harp switch stands. The Orbisonia shop complex, built after the 1882 fire, is one of the most outstanding examples of steam-powered, belt driven machinery in America.

The Cars of Pullman. Book. One of America's greatest business enterprises, the Pullman Company provided outstanding service aboard a vast fleet of railroad passenger cars that could be found in almost every nook and cranny of the United States. This illustrated history examines Pullman's diverse fleet, from its spectacular custom-built wooden cars of the nineteenth century to steel heavyweight cars in the prewar years and on into the lightweight streamlined era. Pullman cars are a tribute to a hard-working generation of men and women who worked to bring the coasts of the United States together efficiently and in style. Author Joe Welsh includes period photos, many in rare color, as well as car diagrams and ads that help trace the development, composition, and evolution of the historically and culturally significant Pullman fleet, including the gamut of sleeper, parlor, and restaurant cars. Take an interesting look into the time period that relied on train cars, as well as the classic style of the cars themselves. This is a fitting tribute to the former cultural icons aboard which strode giants of American life, such as Babe Ruth and Clark Gable, as well as first-time travelers from small-town America.

Book. ~ The Rio Grande Southern Story Voume XI. By Russ Collman, Dell A. McCoy and Robert W. McLeod with Several Guest Contributors Durango and the Perins Peak Branch. Hardbound; about 8 1/2 x 11 inches; 376 pages; indexed; w/deluxe plastic dust jacket; 26 detailed maps; 17 full-color photos; 321 historic black & white views; features line drawings of buildings and structures along the RGS. This book illustrates Durango's development year-by-year as the town progressed and the D&RG upgraded its railroad facilities. Once Otto Mears' Rio Grande Southern arrived on the scene in 1890, additional revenue created a boom as travelers ate, drank and bedded down, as well as shopped in Durango. This growing town was an interchange point between two narrow-gauge railroads and the history of the RGS becomes inseparably entwined at Durango with that of the D&RG--which controlled the RGS throughout most of its existence.

Climax The History of Colorado's Climax Molybdenum Mine

Part #: CEN-CLIMAX

Centennial Publications

High atop the Continental Divide, the Climax Mine opened during World War I to meet military needs for molybdenum, a metallic element that enhances the toughness and durability of steel. Climax became the most successful American company of the Great Depression, even as its workers cursed the mine as “that hellhole near the sky.” During World War II, Climax single-handedly supplied the huge Allied molybdenum demand, and in the postwar years became the world’s largest underground mine. But in 1981, the molybdenum market crashed and caused devastating layoffs. For most of the next three decades, Climax remained on a care-and-maintenance status with only occasional and very limited production. But after a $750-million rebuilding program, the Climax Mine restarted in 2012 and is again a major source of the world’s molybdenum. Steve Voynick’s deft portrayal of Climax and its people, along with more than 100 rare photographs, make this updated edition of Climax: The History of Colorado’s Climax Molybdenum Mine an invaluable contribution to western mining lore.

In a landscape (9 x 12") format that lends itself to large photographs, Bob shows the railroad, its operations and equipment in dramatic style. This 208-page hardbound book features color covers and an all-color, 16-page photo section with photos taken as far back as 1950. Features 100-pound glossy, enameled paper and a beautiful Gil Bennett color painting on the cover.

The Un-Driving of the Golden Spike

Part #: CEN-DRIVINGGOLDSPIKE

Centennial Publications

Softcover, 10x8 horizontal format, 80 pages, 75 photos, map. 2013. "The driving of the Golden Spike at Promontory Summit, located in the high desert region of northern Utah, marked the completion of the first Transcontinental Railroad on May 10, 1869. "Seventy-three years later, on September 8, 1942, the Golden Spike was "un-driven" at Promontory Summit during a brief ceremony that largely replicated the original event in reverse. "The tracks were then torn up for military use during World War II, whereafter Promontory Summit was largely forgotten. "This is the illustrated story of the un-driving of the Golden Spike in 1942 and the various personalities involved. It's also the story of a century-long struggle to have America rediscover the significance of Promontory Summit, which culminated in the establishment of the Golden Spike National Historic Site."
