COLORS FOR YOUR SCENERY
Colors at a glance:
Based on the application of artists' tube collectors as stains on raw, gypsum
plaster

The Earth Colors:
-Chalky gray marls...Raw umber as a thin stain
-Tans......................Raw umber as a heavy stain
-Browns..................Burnt umber with or without Vandyke brown
-Rich browns...........Burnt umber and burnt sienna
-Reddish browns......Burnt and raw siennas
-Piedmont reds........Scarlet modified with burnt sienna
-Black..................Vandyke brown


Colors in Rocks:
-Red sandstones.....Indian red with burnts sienna or Vandyke brown
-Brownstone...........Vandyke brown with approximately 5 percent orange
-Yellow sandstones..Light chrome yellow with Vandyke brown or dark umber
-Limestone..............Pale gray derived from thin black stain and tinted at
random with overwashes of ultramarine and burnt sienna
-Granite..................Gray - black stain tinted with ultramarine overwash
..........................Blue - ultramarine and black medium heavy stain
..........................Red - claret direct from tube
-Shale....................Burnt sienna, banded with Vandyke brown
-Schist...................Pale olive stain
-Basalt...................Dark gray stain to heavy blue-black like coal


Wild Grasses:
-Pale greens..........(1) Light chrome green and white
......................(2) Medium chrome green and light yellow grayed with white
......................(3) Same as No. 1 or No.2 but with black or Vandyke brown added
-Medium Greens........(4) Olive (green, yellow, red, white and black)
......................(5) Same as No. 4 but with less red
......................(6) Same as No. 4 but with less white
......................(7) Same as No. 4 but with less black


Color Directions:


Foliage coloring:
Tree foliage is commonly darker than grasses. Experiment with single pieces
of lichen until a satisfactory shade is achieved.

Coloring with oil stains:
(Avoid brilliant greens)
Basic color: A blending of medium chrome green and medium chrome
yellow. Dull this shade with small quantity of lampblack or van dyke brown General color tone for many trees: Olive - use basic colorl; add vermillion,
white and black in varying proportions to suit. Spring foliage, willows, many shrubs: Basic color. Omit black or brown. Add
white to suit. Distant foliage: Basic color. Add white to gray it. Dull slightly with black.


Coloring with water dye:
Tintex. Forest green, dulled with black.
